Nuclear Level Densities in the Constant--Spacing Model    [PDF]

Adriana Pálffy, Hans A. Weidenmüller
A new method to calculate global level densities for non-interacting Fermions within the constant-spacing model with a finite number of states is developed. The effectiveness of the approach renders accessible for the first time the domain of high particle-hole number and excitation energy. We show analytically that the level densities for particles and/or holes tend asymptotically (for large numbers of particles and holes) towards a Gaussian form and work out the low moments of the distribution. Comparison with exact numerical results shows that the resulting sixth-moment approximation is excellent except near the boundaries of the spectra. For this boundary region, our method can deliver numerically the exact values.
